BGC

now has a Renewables and Training Centre in Stoke that has live systems such as air source heat pumps, PV, solar thermal etc for the joint purposes of promoting renewable energy solutions and training. Their Open Day was attended by Joan Whalley MP, who supports the Warm Front scheme.

Training will be provided for UK-wide as well as in-house installers. Trainees will learn how to fit solar panels and converters for photovoltaic (PV) technology to produce electricity, or air and ground source heat pumps, and solar panels which heat hot water. Renewables - Green Wizard Project: BGC

As part of its commitment to social inclusion and community involvement, BGC Group has launched a schools programme aimed at raising awareness of the benefits of renewable energy amongst 7-10 year olds.

At the heart of the programme is a professionally produced illustrated story book: The Green Wizard and the Precious Energy Source. The book tells the story of Green Wizard Bertram Geoffrey Chillipepper’s quest to save planet earth as he helps children and their families reduce energy bills and protect the environment by installing solar panels, or heat pumps. Along the way he defeats his nemesis - evil warty warlock Carlos Hemlock, who loves burning fossil fuels and creating smoke.

The book is simple, fun, evokes memorable, colourful characters and uses child friendly terminology. It has been written and illustrated to entertain whilst stimulating debate and leading to other activities as part of the school curriculum.

Experts in theatre in education were consulted during the writing and illustration phases, and the book has also been trialled in several primary schools. Feedback from teachers and pupils alike was positive. They enjoyed the book and said it encouraged further discussion of issues around renewable energy and the environment that pupils enjoyed. The book is available to schools on request. Teachers’ notes and other activities relating to the book are also being prepared. Apply to BCG at email: bgcrenewables@bgcltd.com
