GA/11/10/06                                                                                                                   GRANT 1/2

APPLYING FOR A CENTRAL HEATING GRANT?
Consult the Professional Contractor

Considering applying for a grant for central heating and equipment? Couple this with employing a professional heating contractor, mindful of customer care and striving for professional quality status beyond just, but nevertheless important, technical competence. We have all seen the television programmes with firms failing on both counts!

One route is to employ a member of the Grant Aided Heating Installers Network, whose members have adopted a new Code of Conduct, which covers fair dealing with customers, avoiding misleading statements, maintaining technical registration and competence, and a complaints procedure. Members also need to hold, or be committed to achieving, a recognised qualitative award, including Investors in People, Investors in Excellence, the former quality British Standard, now ISO 9001 – 2000 QA, and others.

The new industry Code has the full support of the Eaga Partnership, manager of the Warm Front Scheme in England. Warm Front is a government-funded scheme, which provides a package of insulation and heating improvements tailored to each property to make it warmer, healthier and more energy-efficient.

These improvements include loft insulation, draught-proofing, cavity-wall insulation, hot-water-tank insulation, gas, electric or oil central-heating, or repairs to an existing heating system, up to the value of £2700. Some homes that need oil central heating may receive a grant of up to £4000. Eaga Partnership also manages similar schemes for the other UK nations. For more information, call free on 0800 316 6011.

Local authorities may provide any homeowner or private tenant with heating improvements according to their incomes. Grants may also be available to all customers, regardless of income, though energy retailers via the Energy Efficiency Commitment Scheme. Some GAIN members also install solar panels and wind turbines, which are subject to grants from the government DTI Low Carbon Building Programme to help provide hot water and electricity.

Whether or not you think you may qualify for one of these grants you can benefit from the professional expertise and service offered by GAIN members.
